Meet Me on Monday Week 21

Questions:

1.  I wish I had more time to _________?
Wow! I could really create a long list for this. I was just talking to a friend this weekend about how I wish I had time to play video games. I know it sounds silly, but they are really fun and I enjoy them. I make time to read books, but I can't justify making time to play video games!
I started this game in 2002, but have yet to finish it. :( I will one day!

2.  What is your favorite kind of soup?
Hmmm...I guess chicken noodle. I'm not a big soup person, but I loved the Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup when I was sick growing up.

3.  Where will you eat Thanksgiving dinner?
This year we are going to Lee's friend's house on Wednesday for Thanksgiving dinner. Lee usually works Thursday evenings so we have to celebrate early. This year he will work early on Thursday, so we are heading to my friend's for the day. This will be my first year not making the meal in quite some time. I think I'm okay with it.
This was our spread last year. Don't pay attention to the dishes in the sink-it was time to eat.

4.  What is your favorite time of day?
Gosh, it's hard to say. I like different times depending on my mood. I could say my favorite time of day is when I eat! Hahahaha!

5.  Did you start Christmas shopping yet?
Um....I thought about starting my holiday shopping...does that count?

Tuesday Tales: Detergent Dosing

Tuesday Tales is a new segment to Bum Luxury's blog. We all see things on the internet and wonder what is true and what is fiction. Tuesday Tales will point out some of the false information you might come across while reading blogs and online forums. If you've seen something you find is strange or hard to believe, feel free to share it with me so we can find the truths together.

This article from www.wazoodle.com has been going around the internet lately and I want to warn my fellow CDers to be careful of what you read when it comes to washing routines. I have cut and pasted parts of the article to go over. You can see my comments in italics.

I, myself, am not a textile expert or a laundry expert. However, I have done loads of research (and laundry) and use common sense.

Understanding the wash

When finished, dry your diapers on medium heat or cloths line.
If you dry your cloth diapers in the dryer, I would do it on low if any of them have PUL. Most manufacturers refer to this on their care site and tags. Drying your diapers on medium heat can void the warranty. I prefer to use a clothesline which gets out most of the stains the writer says are caused by bad laundering or when using the wrong detergent.

The harder your water, the more likely you'll need a big-brand detergent.
Later in the article she defines 'big-brand' as a well known detergent. I disagree with her statement.

Selecting Detergents

If in doubt about what works best in your area, visit the biggest grocer in your area and ask which brand of detergent sells best -- chances are the masses have already figured it out for you.
I think it's important to read reviews on items you buy. What sells best doesn't make it the right choice for you and your family or washing needs. Advertising does a lot for a brand and a better item might not have as much money to advertise. Think of the first time you heard of cloth diapering-you probably heard of Bum Genius or Fuzzibunz, because those are two of the big companies and they have more money to advertise. Great diapers like Knickernappies are still an awesome choice, but you might not have heard about them because it's a smaller company with a smaller budget. Also along these lines are the cheapie diapers-Sunbaby, Kawaii, Alvas, etc.-I would bet a majority of cloth diaper users have tried them because they are cheap, but that doesn't mean they are going to work for you. Make sense?

Detergent Dosing

The practice of low detergent dosing is something that has been created by diaper manufacturers who don't understand how water, detergent and textiles interact in the wash.  There is no good reason for low doses, is simply a bad practice.

I have to disagree with this. There are many detergents out there that were developed just to be used on cloth diapers. Using the recommended amount of detergent is important. However, when you read most detergent directions, the recommended amount is for a full load. You may not always wash a full load of diapers at one time. Therefore, you need to use less detergent to get the diapers clean.

Most detergents you see everyday in the laundry aisle have items in the ingredient list that can't be used on cloth. Also, many detergents were developed before HE washers came out as well so the recommended amount by the detergent manufacturer may be incorrect. It is important to make sure you use an HE detergent if you have an HE machine.

It is widely known that the makers of laundry detergents and dish washing detergents have recommended the use of more than enough of their product for many years. Why would they do this? More sales! If you are using more, you must need to buy more. Plus, if you use too much, your dishes/clothes may not come out as clean because of all of the residue left behind which leads people to buy more. It's an endless cycle.

The key to detergent is this: if your diapers come out smelling like soap or you see suds in the rinse cycle, you used too much detergent and need to rinse it out. If your diapers come out smelling like funk, you didn't use enough detergent and they aren't clean yet so wash them again with a little more. Next time, you'll know better. :)

Washing and Drying

  • Use the right detergent, in the right dose -- even if your diaper manufacturer recommends otherwise! Only if you don't care about your warranty...I did add a link to a chart for CD safe detergents.
  • Disinfectants are OK - vinegar, small amounts of bleach and other laundry safe sanitizers can be used. Most of the brands I use specifically say not to use bleach. My washer says no vinegar, so I'm going to pass.
  • Double the rinse cycle if your washer has that feature. Yes, rinsing is key to a good wash routine.
  • Tumble or line dry (no drier sheets).  If you line dry it's a good idea to tumble diapers in a drier occasionally to loosen and soften the diaper. I agree. If the diapers stiffen, the dryer can soften the diaper, but it's not necessary. I usually only have trouble with stiff hemp inserts or flannel wipes. Once the wipes are wet though, it's not an issue, and moving the hemp around in my hands a bit softens it just fine.

Special Situations and Remedial Actions

Hemp:
Hemp does not dry sufficiently on a line unless the relative humidity is less than 8% (meaning you live in a desert).
I do live in the desert, fortunately. My hemp is more than dry even when the humidity reaches 50% or higher-I know that's not very high compared to many other places. I wonder where the writer got this statistic of 8%.)

If you don't dry hemp diapers completely, trapped moisture is slowly released which enables microbes to feed on the diaper fibers when your diapers are stored.  You'll know is this is a problem as your diapers will develop 'hemp-stink' a persistent odor that is present in clean diapers.
If they smell, they aren't clean.

Stripping:

Feel free to check the linked article to read her recommendations. I did not want them to clog up my post as I completely disagree.

Where to start? People either love using vinegar or won't go near it. I'm in the latter group-I won't risk ruining my diapers or my washing machine. Did you know using vinegar can ruin the rubber casings in your machine and void your warrant? It can also ruin the elastic and PUL in your diapers. Not worth the risk.

CLR? I am shocked to see this is a recommended stripping method. Please be aware that the official site for this product says specifically not to use CLR on fabrics. Plus, it is a very corrosive and I wouldn't want it anywhere near my baby's skin. If I'm already having to trouble shoot due to the wrong laundry detergent, I would hate to see the troubleshooting guide for using CLR on diapers.

Persistent Odor:

If you diapers have an ammonia or barn-smell, that means there is poop left in your diapers after washing.

I believe it is important to make sure you use the right amount of detergent. Ammonia is not caused by poop, however. It is caused from the urea in urine. Kimberly Webb of Rockin Green Detergent wrote a great article on the ammonia stinkies and what causes them.

Conclusion

The key to a good wash routine is water. A good, cold pre-rinse and if needed a soak, a hot wash and another cold rinse at the end is the simple way to wash your diapers. If you have issues, add more water to your routine first and see if that fixes it. If not, contact a retailer or the manufacturer for help.

Meet Me on Monday Week 20

Questions:

1. Do your family/friends know about your blog?
Yes, most of them do. I post it on Facebook/Twitter automatically so they are able to see it. I've talked about it with people who aren't using social media, but not sure how often they decide to check it. I'm guessing, not very. :)
2. What is your favorite card game?
I love games. If I had to choose a favorite, I would have to say Spades. I played it growing up and it was always a great way to pass a night. I also love Skip Bo and Phase 10. Oh, and Uno! :)
Everyone wants these when playing Spades!
3. What do you wear to bed?
Usually an old Tshirt. Boring, I know. I am not a Tshirt wearer when out and about, but as a teacher, we always had spirit shirts so I have a ton of Tshirts that would feel lonely if I never wore them. Plus, I don't want to spend money on cute PJs when I don't really need them.
This just looks too constricting.
4. What is your favorite kind of French Fry?
My absolute favorite french fry comes from Wing Stop! If you haven't had them, go and get them. They are so delicious. I have searched the internet trying to find their recipe for seasoning, but it must be a secret. Man, now I want some!
5. What is your usual bed time?
My average bed time is 10:00pm. When I'm into a really good book though, it's hard to put it down.
This happens to me quite often. I have trouble turning off my brain.

Honoring our Heroes

I was never in the military myself, but I have great appreciation for the men and women brave enough to serve our country.

I grew up with my aunt who was a marine. By the time I lived with her, she was not enlisted, but her habits she learned while serving stuck with her and were passed down to us. Every Saturday morning my brothers and I had to, "report for duty," and were assigned our chores for the day. I hated that. I still cringe every time I think about it. (We had to say we were reporting-I love my aunt and all, but that's kind of weird!) When we were done with whatever assignment we had, we were to report back. That, a spick and span house, and hospital corners on all of our beds were a part of life. Most of them still are...the spick and span house has lacked a little since I've left home.

Before we were married, my husband, Lee, was in the US Air Force. He enlisted for the education, following in his dad's footsteps. He always wanted to be an air traffic controller, and he got on the job training and a free education with the military. He still has his GI Bill to use when he wants to take more classes, too. While he did his thing, I worked on base for two years while putting myself through college. I loved the family environment in the military and even though you were far from home, you always felt like you were there.

Once Lee had served his four years, he pursued his career with the FAA. He was still in the inactive reserves for four years, but that has long passed. (Lee did want to stay in the reserves, however there is not a job for him as a controller and he would have had to leave and go to tech school for a different career.)  There are so many things we miss about military life. It is such a close knit group of people-even though there are thousands who serve.

One thing that we always loved was a military discount. No matter where we would go, we would ask if the place had one-movies, department stores, special events, etc. I would guess 7/10 places would offer a discount and 6 out of those 7 didn't advertise it. As the frugal person I am, I always asked! Lee was the one who would want to go to Golden Corral on Veteran's Day because it was free-along with the rest of the base!

Now that I own Bum Luxury, I want to make sure I honor the people who have served our country and give them a discount. That's why Bum Luxury offers a 10% discount and free shipping to all of our veterans every day of the year.

Happy Veteran's Day!

Meet Me on Monday Week 19

Questions:

1. Are you excited for the holidays or are you dreading them?
I'm excited. This is such a fun time of year to eat, drink and be merry. I love finding new recipes to try and eating the deliciousness. Plus, I love giving presents and making people happy.
These Pumpkin Ginger Cupcakes were my first new dessert of the season. Try them-they are to die for! On www.allrecipes.com

2. Do you hit the snooze button or get right up?
I can't hit the snooze button-that would be considered child abuse. ;)

3. Do you still have your tonsils?
Yes.

4. What was the last piece of candy that you ate?
Twix mini-this stash of Halloween candy is expanding my waist at an alarming rate.
Twix was my favorite candy bar growing up. Now I love Snickers. It's probably because of their most scrumptious ice cream bars!

5. Do you shop at thrift stores?
Yes! I am all about saving some money and getting a good deal!
My favorite place to get books!

1st Friday Fluff: Best Bottom Diapers

Another month has gone by and I'm ready to share with you another of my favorite diapers!

Since we discussed a pocket diaper last month, this month we are going to talk about an All in Two (AI2.) An AI2 is a diaper that is two separate pieces that you snap together. First, there is an outer shell that is the waterproof layer. Next, you have an insert that you snap into the shell that goes directly next to baby's skin. The AI2 is usually cheaper than All in Ones (AIOs) and pockets. The great thing about an AI2 is that you can reuse the cover multiple times throughout the day and just change the insert.

Best Bottom Diapers are an awesome choice for an AI2! They are made in the USA which is an important factor in choosing the diapers I stock at Bum Luxury. Best Bottoms also have many choices for families to find what works best for them.

First, you can choose between closures on your shell: hook and loop (AKA velcro or aplix) or snaps. Personally, I prefer snaps. I always forget to close the velcro on the laundry tabs before putting them in the pail and that causes it to stick to other things in my wash. Not good. However, velcro is easier to put on babies who are especially wiggly and usually grandparents, husbands and child care providers prefer it.

Hook and Loop closure
Snap Closure
Your next option is colors. Best Bottom has a variety of colors and prints to choose from for boys and girls. I love how their color names are ice cream flavors like Moo-licious and Cookies and Cream.
After you pick your shell you will need to get inserts for your diaper to have absorbency. Because the Best Bottom Shell is a one size cover, there are three sizes to choose from when it comes to inserts: small, medium, and large.

This simple guide helps you pick the right size insert for your child:

Small: birth-14lbs, Medium: 11-22lbs, Large: 16-35lbs

The inserts are color coded so when you have multiple children in diapers, it's easy to spot the right size.

Small has green, medium has white, and large inserts have blue stitching around the edges for an easy way to pick sizes.
Best Bottom now has five insert choices to choose from: stay dry, hemp/organic cotton, overnight, overnight hemp and a micro doubler. Wow! I know it can sound confusing, so let's see what our options are all about.

First, you have a stay dry insert. This insert is the most economical. It is made up of four layers of microfiber and topped w/ a stay dry fleece that goes against baby's skin. This option is great for everyday daytime use.

Next, you can choose a hemp/organic cotton insert. This insert is more absorbent than the stay dry and will have a trimmer fit.
Hemp inserts will shrink a bit when first washed. This is normal and will fit in the shell correctly.
Your overnight insert is just that-made for wearing overnight. The overnight insert is made to work with a stay dry or hemp insert snapped on top. The overnight insert is made of only microfiber, and you don't want that to stay against baby's skin.

In the last month, Best Bottoms has come out with two new choices in their inserts.

First, you have the overnight hemp. Again, hemp is more absorbent than microfiber and you wouldn't have to use an extra topper. This way, the diaper is trimmer and baby isn't going to bed with a huge bubble butt!

Lastly, Best Bottoms has a doubler option. When you want just a little extra protection from leaks, you can add this to your diaper along with your insert of choice snapped on top.

Double leg gussets for extra leak protection
I began using Best Bottom diapers after Baby J turned one, so unfortunately, I am not sure how they fit on newborns. I will have information for you when my new tester comes along in April. No, I'm not expecting, but my friend Twinkle is and I will be happy to change diapers for her to get an idea of the best fit on little babies!
Good fit-these are not snapped down at all. The way the Best Bottoms sit is like underwear.
We started with the large inserts because Baby J was right around 18lbs. at the time. She is now almost 25lbs.

View from the back-the diaper sits up higher, but I can adjust that to make it lower and higher in the front. They fit her well like this, so it doesn't bother me. Plus, at 16 months, it's a PITA trying to get this girl to sit still for anything.
I love the way the BB diapers fit Baby J and I love even more how they never leak. I haven't had one issue with them and they are now my favorite overnight solution. I don't have to worry about super stuffing a pocket-it's so much easier to just snap two inserts into a shell.

View from the front. This is her 'after lunch' belly. The front of the BB has an elastic waist so that there isn't gapping; therefore, no leakage. :)
I am not usually a fan of AI2s because many companies make the insert to narrow and they bunch up in the cracks and crevices. That can't be comfortable for baby. The Best Bottom inserts are nice and wide so there is no bunching up. Plus the snaps on the front and back keep the insert where it's supposed to be.

Most people buy 3 inserts per shell, so you can have 3 diapers for as low as $28.80, which makes the diaper $9.60 a piece.

When I decided to try it out, I got one type of each insert-the doubler and hemp overnight were not out yet. I prefer the stay dry to the hemp because I line dry and that makes the hemp hard and stiff and I don't like putting that against Baby J's bottom. When I do put hemp in the dryer, it comes out super soft, so if you don't line dry, I would recommend the hemp.

Now enter to win a Best Bottom Shell and stay dry insert!
